Melissa is a highly experienced children and young people's practitioner with a strong background in psychology, mental health, therapeutic practice, and residential childcare.

My Story

I am an experienced children and young people’s practitioner with over 20 years’ experience working with looked-after children and young people, having begun my career in residential childcare in 2005. I have a background in psychology, mental health, therapeutic practice and residential childcare. I hold a BSc (Hons) in Psychology, Counselling and Health and a Postgraduate Certificate in Parent Training, alongside qualifications in Health and Social Care for Children and Young People.

I have extensive experience supporting children and young people who have experienced trauma, adversity and disrupted attachment. My previous roles within CAMHS and local authority services have included supporting looked-after children and care leavers, providing psychological and systemic consultation, undertaking needs assessments, delivering creative therapeutic interventions and providing reflective supervision and therapeutic consultation to residential teams.

A significant part of my work has involved developing the knowledge, confidence and therapeutic capacity of the adults around children and young people. I have delivered training and consultation to professionals, parents and carers on trauma, attachment and therapeutic approaches, alongside facilitating group therapeutic parenting programmes. My approach focuses on deepening adults’ understanding of the underlying needs and experiences of the children they care for, and supporting them to respond in ways that promote connection, emotional regulation and positive relationships. Through this work I aim to help adults make meaningful and sustainable changes that can improve outcomes for children and young people.

I bring a compassionate, reflective and collaborative approach to my work, supporting teams to think creatively about the needs of each young person and to create environments where children and young people can feel safe, understood, valued and able to thrive.
